While I was living in Playa del Carmen, a group of my friends from back home rented a beautiful luxury home in Akumal for ten days and invited me over to visit. Akumal is a small town about 30 minutes south of Playa del Carmen. It is known for its year-round population of several species of sea turtles and other marine life which inhabit a coral reef a short distance from the beach. It is an amazing place to snorkel as you are almost guaranteed to see a sea turtle, if not several, as they graze along the ocean floor where the sea grass grows.
I wish I would have had an underwater camera for the snorkel because I saw a wide variety of creatures including anemones, parrotfish, cuttlefish, urchins, coral, a whole school of blue tang, a barracuda, a huge stingray, and, of course, sea turtles!
can you spot the iguana?
