The town of Tulum is a quick hour drive south of Playa del Carmen. It’s known for its hippie vibe and beautiful Mayan ruins at the top of sheer limestone cliffs overlooking the turquoise blue Caribbean. You can take a colectivo bus for a few pesos or rent a car and stop at Akumal and some cenotes for full day of water fun! The ruins draw a lot of tourists, so get there early or later in the day to avoid the crowds and the heat. The entrance fee is around 60 pesos, and there is not much shade, so be sure to bring sunscreen, water, and a hat!
